Where I used to work, one of my responsibilities was managing a holiday toy drive for the office. We would do a tree with “ornaments” with the names, ages, and toys/gifts kids who attended a local Head Start wanted written on them. Employees could pick an ornament and do the shopping and put the gifts under the tree at the office, and then we would deliver them to the kiddos. One day I was standing by the tree when a coworker perusing the ornaments looked over at me and said in disgust, “This kid is asking for a video game console??? That’s an awful big wish for a poor kid, isn’t it??” I told the guy to step away from the tree and leave the gift giving to the rest of the office that year, please and thank you. You summed it up perfectly here. Thank you for sharing your story and insights with us all.
